About OpenPrograms
OpenPrograms helps people applying to residency or fellowship compare programs on something that's usually hard to see from the outside: the research happening where they would train. For every program, it measures publication output and field-normalized citation impact at the sponsoring institution. Where a program's roster is available, it also shows how often residents publish and in which author positions.
Where the data comes from
- OpenAlex, an open (CC0) catalog of scholarly works, for publications, citations, and field normalization.
- The CMS list of teaching hospitals (public domain), as the universe of hospitals that train residents.
- Each program's own website, for which residencies and fellowships it runs and who its leadership and trainees are.
Everything refreshes automatically, and new programs are added as teaching hospitals are verified. How each number is calculated.
What it isn't
Research output is one lens on a program. It says nothing about clinical training, teaching, wellness, culture, or fit, which matter at least as much. OpenPrograms isn't a ranking of program quality and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by ACGME, AAMC, NRMP, or any program.
Keeping it accurate
Matching people and institutions to publications is imperfect. If something looks wrong, or you're listed and would rather not be, tell us. Every request is reviewed.
